Steve and I first met in first grade at Thome School, and we were actually in the same class together all six years at Thome. In two of the years together our seats were side by side. One thing that Steve liked, as many of us did too, was to play softball during recess and see how many times we could hit the Jim wall. We followed the same course together in junior high and we had the same home room teacher for both years, and also had many classes together. Steve and I lost touch for over fifty years, then one morning at the Table Café in Rock Falls, he showed up. For many years I had been coming back to Rock Falls in the summer time and a number of us would always take in a Cubs game while I was visiting. Three times out of the last six years, Steve came to our little breakfast. we got to renew our friendship and talk about the days gone buy. We would get on each other as he was a die-hard Cubs fan, and I had been a Dodger fam since 1948. We talked a lot of baseball and had a great time doing it. He couldn't believe that I had been Ernie Banks caddie on the course several times when he played with my father. Steve thought that was really special. Steve was a special person and one that everyone is going to miss. I looked back in my pictures and found our sixth grade class photo outside of Thome School. We had three shots taken that day, one of the whole class, then one of the girls and boys separately. I have included the boys shot, and one of a close up of Steve.
My thoughts and prayers go out to of Steve's family and friends.
