Alecia is my big sister. She loved being my big sister!! 63 years old - born in 1957. In spite of all other circumstances and influences in her life, she was a loving, compassionate, kind soul - and she was generous to a fault. She would give you the shirt off her back if you asked for it and thought you needed it more than she did. My sister Val once gave her new living room furniture and Alecia gave it away to neighbors down the hall because she thought they needed it more than she. She loved a corny joke. Would always laugh and giggle at the silliest things. I'll never forget that giggle. She loved being silly. She loved Christmas - truly because she loved and enjoyed giving more than receiving.
Alecia was put here on this earth for a purpose. Our providential God had a plan for her life. And I believe she fulfilled that purpose - perfectly!
My family was involved in a horrific car accident in 1963 - three years before I was born. All were severely injured. Alecia suffered a devastating brain injury - was in a coma for a very long time - and had to relearn everything as if an infant once more. Alecia never did fully recover - and suffered a life-long battle - if you will - in her brain between what she thought to be normal - what she desired to be - what she thought others thought she should be - and what she was truly limited by and capable of. But in the end - she was exactly who God wanted her to be!
You know - we run around life - caught up in what we think is important. Dedicate the majority of our hours working to make money - to buy things - to sooth our longings and desires - to numb our senses - to feed our addictions - to impress others. But Alecia.... Alecia was able to live out what Jesus said to do even better and more perfectly in her post accident condition. The very words that came out of His mouth. From Matthew our Lord said - "Truly I say to you, if you are not converted and become as the little children, you shall never enter into the kingdom of heaven. Unless you live out your life as a little child.... . Alecia lived out her life with a child-like grace. Her life was a witness to Gods intention for all of us. TO LOVE. Anyone that knew Alecia knew that she LOVED!!!
Long ago I remember having a conversation with one of my Pastors about sin and death and the final judgement. And his words have helped to shape and guide my life. I remember asking and wondering what the final judgment looked like - what would happen - oh my goodness I'll have to recount everything little thing I did - fearing the repercussions of my sin. And he told me and I'll never forget - he said John - God already knows every sin you've ever committed - every sin you are committing - every sin you will ever commit in the future. He has already covered that on the cross and washed that clean with His blood. No - the judgement will not be a systematic enumeration of my lifetime of sin - he said you will be judged, John, on how you loved. How you treated others while on this earth. How loving and charitable and compassionate you were to Gods other children.
Alecia had this figured out. She knew how to love. These past few days we've have the opportunity and privilege of going thru Alecia's things. Alecia didn't have a lot of earthly possessions - but she left us treasures of her writings. Written prayers for all she knew - inspirational writings and advice from her Dad, Grandpa, and those she lover and who loved and were concerned for her well-being - bible verses - lyrics of favorite hymns. Hundreds... as if she were speaking to us from heaven!!
We can all learn something very important from the witness of Alecia's life. Let's not miss the opportunity to live and love with a child-like abandon.
Her Body may be empty now...but her Love remains and will live on in our hearts and thoughts forever.
I love you Big Sis. You are whole again walking the golden streets with Jesus. Have fun up there! You definitely deserve your reward!
