My father Franklin Coplan attended Eureka College, graduating in 1931. He participated on the track and field team and was the captain his senior year. He spoke often of and highly of Jim's father, Ralph "Mac" McKinzie as I grew up. We visited Eureka College many times during those years for the Pumpkin Festival and Commencment. In the mid 90's I returned my father's remaining letter sweater to the college for temporary display and then storage. Please accept my condolences at Jim's passing and know that he came from good stock. Ronald Coplan, Morrison, IL

It is so difficult to start this because I know I could write many pages and never cover all the ways that I saw Jim McKinzie positively influence this world. Probably if I had to choose one characteristic that stands out, it is integrity. So many of us were able to observe Mr. McKinzie working hard to achieve many goals within athletics, teaching, and coaching. I fondly remember those fall football games in the Sterling stadium or the basketball games where so many of us made sure we were there. He visibly reached out to explain, mentor, and guide. When he greeted you, he always believed in a smile and usually found ways to sneak in some encouragement within the conversation. He was true to his values inside and outside the classroom and he lived life that way within the community. As much as he was admired for his many obvious accomplishments, I greatly admired the way he believed in his family. He adored Lenore, the kids, and his grandchildren. Lenore and Jim always made us friends feel like part of the family which meant so much over the years. This compassion was evident when he would quietly counsel students who were struggling to find their way in this complicated world. As a teacher, I tried to emulate the way he was able to reach out and make every child feel special. He saw and nurtured the importance of being there for all kids and all people at all times. I am forever grateful for his loving legacy. Such a well-lived life...even finding time for feeding Summit Lake chipmunks or sending some of us snipe hunting in the North woods of Wisconsin. Love and prayers, Lana (Hankins) Tannenbaum and Family

Very Sad news.
Mr. KcKenzie -Jim- was a truly amazing person...teacher, coach, leader...always extraordinaire.
I loved and trusted this guy as both a teacher and a coach. I listened and learned from him. Upbeat, prepared, focused.
He was a WINNER among WINNERS. He had a WINNING attitude (and usually a winning strategy as a coach)...but not at all costs. He was a person of such integrity, sincerity, good humor, and exemplary leadership.
The communities of Sterling, and Whiteside County, and northern Wisconsin are ALL a little sadder, a little darker today...
and those of us who were touched by him are all taking a moment of silence to reflect and remember
the amazing positive attitude, clear values, his generosity and humanity as a teacher, the profound impact of Jim McKenzie on so many lives...ALL for the better.
His legacies live on.
RIP Jim McKenzie

I had the good fortune of having 'Mac' for PE three out of 4 years in High School. Mac treated everyone equally, with honesty, fairness, and many time with good humor. That's not to say he was a pushover! I remember one gym class he told us to run one lap around the track before we played kickball. I never liked to just run, so I looked around and didn't see him out of the field house yet, so I took a shortcut and ran across the football field at one end. I got to the end of the run just as Mac came outside, so I thought I pulled it off! Well, he asked me when did I become so fast and beat so many other guys to the finish? He thought I didn't like to run! So, he told me he was curious how fast I could do TWO laps around, so that's what I did while everyone else went to play kickball!
A great teacher, man and human being. He taught me some of the most valuable lessons I ever learned. The world was a better place for him being in it, and although 90 is a pretty good run, he left us too soon!
Rest in peace, Mac...

Please accept our condolences on the passing of your dad. I read his obituary with great interest, as a student I had no idea how accomplished he was at the collegiate level in a number of sports. I graduated from Sterling high School in 1970 and Jim was my PE teacher two or three years.
All of my brothers had Jim as a teacher or coach. And we all have good memories of him. These past couple of days we have been sharing those memories on a texting thread. They are delightful memories one of my brothers even remembers Jim's dad grandpa Ralph.
Please know that we honor this great man and are thinking of you all during these days.

As I reflect on what Jim (Coach) McKinzie meant to me, I send my heartfelt condolences to the entire McKinzie family. I played basketball for two of his teams that went to state, got to know him and his family personally, and respected him both as a coach and father. He made such an impact on me that I never wanted to disappoint him and I also became a teacher. My husband and and I visited Jim last month and that "twinkle" was still in those blue eyes. My memories of Coach McKinzie will never leave me because he is imprinted in my memory and my heart. I love you, Jim McKinzie!

So sorry for the family's loss, what a great man. He truly will be missed. I was blessed to get to play basketball for him & with Pat & Karen. I was also fortunate enough to spend a summer vacation at the cabin (bless your heart Sue you were brave enough to get in a canoe with me), The wonderful family he raised reflects what a great man he really was.
You are all in my prayers
Sincerely, Chris Woodring
