Our sister Joan loved to read, and sometimes she and I read the same books, including historical novels and Scandinavian mysteries. She also read many books with her daughter. A few books that we both read include The Siege, by English writer Helen Dunmore, one of a trilogy about the German siege of Leningrad during World War II; Summerwater and Bodies of Light, both by English writer Sarah Moss; mysteries by Icelandic writer Arnaldur Indridason and Swedish writer Henning Mankell; World War II spy novels by Alan Furst; and Hamnet, by Maggie O'Farrell, a historical novel about the death of Shakespeare's son. Most recently she enjoyed the Cork O'Connor mystery series by William Kent Krueger, set in Northern Minnesota in an area familiar from family vacations. I always enjoyed talking over the books we read. - Sister Lori

I will always cherish the many phone conversations Joan and I had, especially those that were centered around wonderful shared family memories. Joan was warm, kind hearted and always supportive. I will miss those conversations and listening to her beautiful strong voice. Judy Fritts

Our sister Joan had a soft heart for animals. Over the years she cared for two huskies, Freya and Nikki, and a number of cats, including Millie, Furboy, and Buddyboy. She rescued a number of animals, and if she couldn't keep them she took them to Happy Tails Humane Society in Rock Falls or found them a home. She also supported Ernesto's Sanctuary for Cats in Syria, and greatly admired the work they do. Her pets brought her joy and comfort!

Some memories of my dear sister Joan include many trips we took in her car with our elderly mother to go out for lunch and sometimes antiquing, a shared pleasure. One favorite place was Peoria, Illinois, where we would visit a couple antique malls and enjoy lunch at a local brewery along the water. White Pines State Park was another favorite spot, where we would have lunch in the park lodge -- often finishing with raspberry pie -- visit the gift shop, see the resident parrot, and sit in Adirondack chairs under the pines. For our mother's birthday we would go to Bishop Hill, usually with our sister Diane, and have Swedish food at the Red Oak; then visit the Bishop Hill Colony Store where we could buy Dalarna horses and Swedish food; finishing our visit either in the park under the shade trees or in the local bakery for coffee and Swedish coffee cake. Another family lunch spot was Maxson's on the Rock River for their buffet and orange rolls. We also often visited the lakeside lunch spot at Morrison Rockwood Restaurant for burgers and rhubarb cobbler on the screened-in porch overlooking the water. We girls had a fun time together!
