Q: What will you miss most about Helen?
A: *Her ability to listen without judgement. *Her acceptance of people from all different backgrounds, which made her a good Special Ed teacher! *The unconditional love and support she showed for elders and others in need. *Her fairness: She treated people the same way she would want to be treated.
*Her charismatic, unpretentious nature that made others feel at ease and want to be around her.

Helen Nichols was born and raised in a strongly devoted Catholic family. The thought of her marrying a Methodist was very unsettling to her parents. They did not agree to her engagement unless fiancé, David Murray, converted over to Catholicism himself, which was the normal procedure in the 1950’s. After many religion meetings with Priests and Ministers, Helen made her own decision to become a Methodist against her parents’ advice and request.

Q: What will you never forget about Helen?
A: Growing up with our mother for 20+ years, we honestly never heard her say an unkind word about anyone, and that’s the truth. Her son, Mike, reiterated this same thing while speaking at the podium during her funeral service.
That’s a very remarkable trait to possess, especially now since most people love to express their open-minded opinions.

Q: What was Helen really good at?
A: She loved gardening and would spend hours creating and maintaining flower gardens at her homes in Sterling and Rock Falls. Her freshly cut flowers always made her house smell so nice inside. She had an innate aptitude for decorating without using ideas from magazines. She passed that trait to her daughter, Heather.

“Now I can walk, and I am free. I’m finally where I had hope I’d be.”
Goodbye mother, and our very good friend.
We look forward until together again.
But our times together through all the years
Have helped to take away of tears.
You are ok now, pain free and safe now.
Goodbye mother, until we’re together once again.

Dear Dave and family, I am so sorry for your loss. Even though I only knew your wife/mother for the last 5 years, it was obvious she was a lady of character and grace. I wish I could be there for her funeral and to be a part of helping with the luncheon. I send my deepest condolences at this most difficult time.
