STERLING- Frederic William Ziegler, 88, of Sterling, passed away Sunday, September 28, 2014 at 8:15 AM.
Fred was born March 9, 1926 in Muscatine, IA, the son of Elmer and Wilma (Busch) Ziegler. He was united in marriage to Betty VonBergen in Sterling at the Congregational Church.
Fred attended schools in Muscatine, Aledo, Rock Falls, and the Chicago School of Photography. He served in the U.S. Navy and was stationed in Washington, Oregon, Okinawa, and Chicago Great Lakes. He played in the Navy Band, Navy Jazz Band, and played for the Commissioning of 69 Ships. He also sang in the Blue Jackets Choir.
Fred was employed with Eureka Ambulance and Hearse Company, and Northwestern Steel and Wire as an electrical foreman. He also worked for John Persona and Lyle Eshelman as a Photographer.
Fred was a past member of the 33 Degree Masons, Kabala Temple, Jaycees, Elks, Moose, and the American Legion in Rock Falls. He loved watching his sons play sports, traveling, camping, boating, golfing, and having coffee with the guys.
He is survived by his wife, Betty, of 66 years; three sons, Rick (Joy) Ziegler, of Cape Coral, FL, Ronald (Ann) Ziegler, of Reedsburg, Wisconsin, and Donald (Lynn) Ziegler, of St. Petersburg, FL; nine grandchildren, Sean (April) Ziegler, John (Shainna) Kearney, Shannon (Bree) Ziegler, Becky (Luke) Baker, Zack (Jessie) Ziegler, Rusty (Chica) Ziegler, Heather Ziegler, Hillary Ziegler, and Trudy Dillow; and four great- grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and one sister Dorothy.
Funeral services will be held Friday, October 3, 2014 at 11 AM at First Congregational Church in Rock Falls, with Pastor Al Campbell officiating. Visitation will be held from 10 AM to 11 AM prior to the service. Burial will be held at Riverside Cemetery, Sterling.
