I grew up just up the block from Eric - we played together all the time. I remember quite a few hard-fought football games in the yard across the street (in retrospect, I suspect that the people who actually owned the lawn were less than amused, what with the park right up the street ), as well as many games of "spy", or "soldier", or some other such game involving climbing onto people's garages. Though we lost contact somewhere along the way, the news of his loss is hard.
Mrs. Herner, I'm so sorry for your loss. I doubt you remember me, but I have many happy memories playing with your son when we were younger.
God bless,
SFC William (Bill) Ford

We were sorry to hear of Erics passing,, We are close friends of Sarah's, she's like a daughter to us! We only met Eric once, he was with Sarah at our home for Thanksgiving Dinner years ago. But feel like we know him well as Sarah always spoke of him frequently. Sarah always kept in close contact with him, and she always told us that there was nothing that they couldn't talk about. He was her rock ! She was at our home the evening before she found out about his passing, and was so excited for him making a move to Arizona, even though he would be farther away, but he was excited, so she was excited for him.
May his memories live forever, and comfort his loving family. We are there for you Sarah !!! Love Ya !!

I went to high school with Eric he was class of 87 and I was of 88 but didn't really hang out together until around 1993. That's when we re-met at the gas station in Skokie on main and Skokie Blvd. He was living with his girlfriend near there and I was living with mine 4 blocks away. It was nice to have a buddy close by so we could do guy stuff, things our girlfriends didn't like to do. Eric and I got along because we had a lot of similarities in our life. We both never had much to brag about but we made sure we had a good time at whatever we did and were grateful for what we had and not what we didn't have. We both knew that things could always' be worse. I made Eric a mix tape along time ago, I mean a really long time ago and when we would get together he would play this tape and say "remember this mix tape you made for me". I still can't believe that he had that tape to this day. I mean the mixing was horrible because the beats were off on the transitions: but the tape had a specific song on it that he loved; don't know why but he did. We had a lot good times and some bad times but we still remained friends because of our similarities. I'll always' appreciate Eric as a person because when he said "thank you" he meant it from his heart and not just to say it. I will miss Eric and all the more adventures we now cannot share.
Here is a link to that song he loved on the mix tape

My deepest sympathies to the family and love ones of Eric. May the fondest moments of him become the everlasting memories over the tragic circumstances of his death. I did not get to know him until after our high school's 20th reunion. The few times we met during hangouts with classmates he was pleasant and in good spirits. I am sure he is in peace and in a better place now.

Our condolences to Eric's family. We are very sad to hear of your loss. Recently, Eric and Dave spent quite a bit of time together when he was visiting Phoenix last month and seems like he was looking forward to moving to Phoenix. Dave was looking forward to running around cities in Arizona with him, like they did when Eric visited. He will be greatly missed.

I went to Evanston Township High School with Eric Herner. He was always fun to be around, liked to laugh, and didn't have a ounce of meanness in him. Eric will be missed.

Dear Edith and Sarah, It is with great sadness we heard from Vernon and Linda Long of the untimely passing of your son and brother. Since we moved to Arizona 12 years ago, we seem not to keep in touch with friends from Illinois like we should. We know there will be times when the loss will seem unbearable. We do have an awesome God who will be there to comfort you and hold you. Wishing God's special Blessings on you. Weldon and Sharon Long

Dear Edith and Sarah It was with a great sense of loss when I heard of Eric's death. I wanted to let you know that my heart is truly saddened. Eric was more than just a wonderful person; he was always so fun to be around that I always welcomed seeing him at every opportunity. His passing will not only leave a void in my life, but in the hearts of all those who knew him. He was like the brother I never had. Also being great friends with my cousin Patrick, I have great memories I will hold close. Eric will always remain within my heart forever. My sincere thoughts and prayers are with you. With deepest sympathy, -Melody Russell Hiton

Mrs. Martin and Sarah- My family and i would like to express our deepest sympathies. Eric was a good guy and a great pal to Patrick-i dont think i can remember a time before Eric was friends w/ Pat. I have great memories of Eric at our house, cottage, and more recently at my cousin Melodys bowling bday party. Our world is a little less bright w/ out Erics smile-his face would just light up! I can still hear him saying "George!" to Patrick and the laughter that would follow.. What a guy. What a loss. I feel blessed to have known him and witness the bond between him and Pat. I am sorry.
